Employee Productivity Calculator

Estimate productivity by comparing output delivered against labor hours invested. The result helps teams assess operational efficiency and process improvement opportunities.

Productivity Formula

Productivity Rate = Total Output / Total Labor Hours

Inputs used in this calculator

  • Total Output: Units or completed deliverables in the period.
  • Labor Hours: Total labor hours invested in producing the output.

How to use the result

  • Enter the amount of output produced in the period.
  • Enter the total labor hours used to produce that output.
  • Review units per hour and benchmark against team targets.

Method, scope, and sources

Productivity Rate = total comparable, quality-accepted output ÷ total labor hours. This is a supported simple labor-productivity ratio and should be interpreted as a team/process output-per-labor-hour indicator rather than an individual performance score.

Use only when output and labor hours cover the same period, population, and work scope, and the output unit is consistently defined, comparable, and quality-accepted. Quality, work mix, capital, tools, automation, support inputs, and organizational conditions affect the metric. Do not use it alone for performance, pay, discipline, termination, or staffing decisions. Revenue per labor hour is a separately defined commercial ratio.

Method status: Partially supported.

Worked example

Hypothetical fulfillment team: 2,700 quality-accepted standard orders picked and packed in April, excluding cancellations and rework, and 900 defined direct-production labor hours. Productivity = 2,700 ÷ 900 = 3.00 comparable accepted orders per labor hour. This is a team/process result, not an assertion about each employee or causation.

Questions about this calculation

What counts as output?

Use consistently defined, comparable, quality-accepted units. Segment or weight materially different work types rather than pooling unlike raw counts.

Can I use revenue instead of units?

Revenue per labor hour is a separate commercial ratio. Use consistent recognition, price, and product-mix scope, and do not treat it as a universal individual-performance measure.
